Judge Salvatore R. Calandra
Class of 1951
(Deceased)
Salvatore ‘Sal’ R. Calandra is still known in legal circles as a man of tremendous integrity, having served more than 25-years for the Cleveland Municipal Court. Judge Calandra entered public life in 1957 when he became an assistant law director in Cleveland, serving in that capacity during the tenures of three different mayors. He also served as a legal advisor to Cleveland City Council, and as chief counsel for the Cleveland Law Department before he was appointed to the Municipal Court in 1972. Judge Calandra ultimately won a full, six-year term the following year and was re-elected three times before his retirement in 1997. He graduated from Cathedral Latin High School, John Carroll University and the Cleveland-Marshall School of Law. Judge Calandra was also very proud of his service to the country during World War II as a member of the United States Army. Judge Calandra was active in a number of local civic and charitable organizations including the Cleveland Italian American Society, President of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society of the Cleveland Catholic Diocese, and he also headed up the Justinian Forum, a group of lawyers of Italian heritage. Judge and Mrs. Calandra were also inducted into the Northern Ohio Italian-American Hall of Fame.
